Shields is a marvelous little science fiction tale. Author Charli Cox very tactfully begins the story with something familiar, a fighter pilot named James while in training. But as we continue to follow the story of James, the reader is exposed to much more unfamiliar and fantastical concepts of nonhuman lifeforms. Then we become fully immersed in a bizarre new world both fascinating and dangerous. We discover dark secrets of an ancient, underwater civilization and their plot to use humans for their own gain. James must learn to shield his mind from their telepathic attacks seeking to control his thoughts. Will he be strong enough to stop them?
This short story, by science fiction author and libertarian Charli Cox, is part of a book called Tomorrow’s Hope. It is a collection of short stories and essays by a number of different authors.
